The College of Foreign Languages at Shandong Normal University has a long history. Its predecessor was the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, which was founded in 1956. It was renamed as the Department of Foreign Languages in 1966 and was established in 1996. In 2011, it merged with the College of Foreign Language Education of the university to establish a new College of Foreign Languages, becoming the largest college in the university.

The College of Foreign Languages has five departments, one teaching department, an editorial department for “Shandong Foreign Language Teaching” and “Basic Foreign Language Education”, and five research centers. The five departments are the English Department, the Russian Department, the Japanese Department, the Eastern Language Department (Korean and Arabic), the Western Language Department (French, Spanish, and Portuguese), and the University Foreign Language Teaching Department, which is responsible for academic English teaching for doctoral and master’s students in non English majors throughout the university, as well as undergraduate English teaching. In addition, the college has established a Sino foreign Language and Culture Research Exchange Center, a Foreign Literature and Culture Research Center, a Russian Language and Culture Research Center, a Japanese Studies Research Center, and a Korean Culture Research Center. In 2020, the English and Japanese majors were approved as national first-class majors.

The college hires nearly 20 foreign teachers every year.
